File Revision History

I'm sure you've been in a situation where you pressed Command/Control + Z time after time to get back to the way your file used to be. This is good for quick edits, but sometimes you want to go way back and that's just not feasible. In these situations, it's useful to check out your file revision history. To do this, click **File** then **Show File Revision History**: [block:image] { "images": [ { "image": [ "https://files.readme.io/LPYaJN8QtaQFLIxuB1Qw_Screen%20Shot%202015-04-24%20at%2011.16.36%20AM.png", "Screen Shot 2015-04-24 at 11.16.36 AM.png", "358", "465", "#62aff7", "" ] } ] } [/block] The file revision history will show up just above the editor like this: [block:image] { "images": [ { "image": [ "https://files.readme.io/pHRHHRXPTemE2lzZAPye_demo%20project%20%20%20Cloud9.png", "demo project Cloud9.png", "1126", "63", "#e8e4e0", "" ] } ] } [/block] Now you can click certain spots on the timeline to jump there and see what the file looked like at that moment. If you hit the play button you'll see exactly how you typed text into the file in a progression. It's very useful to highlight text and copy it if you want to add it to your new version. You can also revert to a previous version of your document by clicking the revert button on the right side of your revision history bar. All revisions will remain in the history, even if you revert to an original revision. ## See Also - [Lost Code](https://community.c9.io/t/code-disappeared-or-lost/671?utm_source=docs.c9.io&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=FAQ) [block:embed] { "html": "<iframe class=\"embedly-embed\" src=\"//cdn.embedly.com/widgets/media.html?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DqVNjhYQwFXk%26feature%3Dyoutu.be&src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fembed%2FqVNjhYQwFXk%3Ffeature%3Doembed&type=text%2Fhtml&key=02466f963b9b4bb8845a05b53d3235d7&schema=youtube\" width=\"854\" height=\"480\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen></iframe>", "url": "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVNjhYQwFXk&feature=youtu.be", "title": "Recovering Deleted Files", "favicon": "https://s.ytimg.com/yts/img/favicon-vflz7uhzw.ico" } [/block] [block:callout] { "type": "info", "title": "Revision History Grayed Out", "body": "In order to use revision history, you must be in a hosted workspace, not an SSH or FTP workspace.
